She was wrong, of course. But she didn’t know that yet.
Tim sat beside her in my office, small and very still, looking at a point somewhere slightly to the left of my face. He was in 7th grade. Two months earlier, he had scored a near-perfect on the AMC 10, one of the most demanding mathematics competitions in the world for students his age. He was, in any meaningful sense, a prodigy.
And his mother thought he was lazy.
I have been doing this work for more than twenty years. I have sat across from hundreds of families in rooms like this one — the fluorescent hum, the careful posture, the child trying to take up as little space as possible while a parent explains what is wrong with them. I have learned to listen to what parents say and hear what they mean, and I have learned that when a parent of a genuinely exceptional child uses the word lazy, they almost never mean lazy. They mean something else, something they don’t have the vocabulary for yet. My job, in those first few minutes, is to find out what.
I asked Tim’s mother to describe, specifically, what she observed. Not her interpretation. The behavior itself.
He starts his homework and then stops, she said. He knows the answers but won’t write them down. He spends an hour on a problem he solved in ten minutes. He misses the clock on his math competitions because he goes back and checks everything, and then checks it again.
I wrote one word in my notebook.
Perfectionism.
Tim had come to IvyZen through a referral from a close family friend, which is how most of our students arrive — carried on the trust of someone who has already been through the process. His father, a CEO who worked the kind of hours that meant he was supportive in spirit more than in presence, sat slightly behind his wife in the room, listening carefully. His mother was a physics professor at one of the country’s top universities, which told me everything I needed to know about the household temperature around academic performance. She was not a cruel woman. She was a precise one. She had a physicist’s intolerance for inefficiency, and her son looked, from the outside, profoundly inefficient.
Tim himself was quiet in the way that very intelligent children sometimes are — not shy exactly, but watchful. He was short for his age, with a soccer player’s compact physicality. Soccer was his one unambiguous pleasure, the place where nothing was graded and no one reviewed his work afterward. In everything else, there was always an afterward.
I waited until his mother had finished. Then I turned to Tim and asked him a question I did not address to parents in the room.
When you do math, are you fast or are you slow?
He looked at me properly for the first time. I’m slow, he said. That’s the problem. I know the answers but I can never finish in time.
Are you slow, I said, or are you thorough?
Something happened in his face. It was the thing I watch for in first meetings — the small seismic event behind the eyes when a person hears, for the first time, a description of themselves that fits. All he had heard, for as long as this had been a problem, was that he was slow. Slow was a deficit. Slow was his mother’s frustration made into a character trait. Thorough was something else entirely. Thorough was a strength that had been deployed in the wrong context.
He didn’t say anything for a moment. Then he said: Yeah. That’s exactly it.
I met with Tim alone a few days later.
There is a set of questions I ask in these first individual sessions that function less as questions than as diagnostic instruments. I am not listening for the answers so much as for the shape of the answers — the hesitations, the self-corrections, the places where a student’s language suddenly becomes careful in a way it wasn’t before. With Tim, I did not need to listen very hard. The picture assembled itself quickly and completely.
He understood the mathematics. He always understood the mathematics. The problem was that understanding was not enough. He would solve a problem correctly, look at his solution, and feel — not satisfied, not relieved, but uncertain. What if he had missed something? What if the method was right but he had made an arithmetic error somewhere, a small one, invisible? He would go back. He would check. He would find nothing wrong. He would go back again.
On the AMC, where time is everything, this habit was catastrophic. He knew the answers. He simply could not leave them alone.
Do you think I might have OCD? he asked me, with the directness of someone who has been doing their own research.
I told him that I recognized in his description something I had lived — a version of it, in my own relationship with work when I was younger. That I had been, in the clinical sense of the phrase, a recovering perfectionist for most of my adult life.
He looked at me with something that might have been relief.
Do you know where it comes from? I asked him. Perfectionism. Do you know what it actually is?
He thought about it seriously, the way he thought about everything. He offered a few answers — high standards, caring too much, wanting to do well. All reasonable. All wrong.
It’s fear.
He was genuinely surprised. Not the polite surprise of a student performing attentiveness, but real surprise — the kind that arrives when a piece of information reorganizes something you thought you already understood. He sat with it for a moment.
Fear of what?
Fear of the moment when you stop checking, I said. Because the moment you stop checking, you have to accept that it’s done. And if it’s done, it can be judged. And if it’s judged and found wrong, that’s not a mistake in the work — it feels like a mistake in you.
He nodded slowly. It was the nod of someone who has just been handed the correct translation of something they have been carrying in a language they couldn’t read.
The first thing I needed to fix was not Tim.
It was his mother.
This is almost always true. A perfectionist student and an exacting parent form a specific kind of system, and the system has its own logic, its own self-reinforcing momentum. She pushed because she saw him going slowly. He froze more completely because she pushed. The freezing looked like laziness. The laziness made her push harder. Nothing in this cycle had anything to do with laziness, but the cycle had been running for years and had calcified into a family narrative that Tim had, on some level, begun to believe.
I asked to meet with his parents alone.
His mother arrived prepared for a progress report. What I gave her instead was a provocation. I told her that the 4.0 GPA she was optimizing for was not the goal — that it was, in Tim’s specific case, actively working against him. I could see her body change slightly, the physicist’s resistance to a claim that violates a known law.
I had come prepared.
I pulled out a document I keep for exactly these moments: a report card. A real one, from a former student whose academic record contained Bs and Cs in English and history, a student who had shown no particular aptitude for the humanities and had not pretended otherwise. I slid it across the table.
This student, I said, got into MIT. And Caltech.
She stared at it for longer than I expected.
I explained what I wanted her to understand — that Tim’s singular, extraordinary gift was mathematics, and that the energy required to force a mathematically-wired mind to perform at an elite level in literary analysis was energy stolen from the thing that made him exceptional. That the goal was not to be good at everything. The goal was to be as good as possible at the thing that mattered, while being good enough at everything else. That these were different strategies with different outcomes, and that the one she was currently pursuing was producing a child who was terrified of his own mind.
She was quiet for a while.
Then she said: So we accept Bs in the other subjects.
You celebrate Bs in the other subjects, I said. You treat them as evidence that he’s allocating correctly.
It took a few conversations. But she came around. The physicist in her, I think, appreciated the underlying logic once she could hear it past her own anxiety. She agreed: STEM first. Advanced STEM classes. Serious investment in mathematics and science extracurriculars. English and history — good enough, and no more.
A week later I sat down with Tim and told him what had been decided.
So we’re lowering my standards, he said. Because I can’t do well in those other classes.
I heard the shame in it — the way the decision had landed for him not as a strategy but as a concession, a formal acknowledgment of limitation. This was the next problem, and it was a subtler one. He had accepted the terms without accepting the meaning behind them, and without the meaning, the terms would not hold.
I spent the next hour doing what I think of as Socratic coaching — not explaining a conclusion but guiding a student to discover it themselves, because conclusions that are discovered are owned in a way that conclusions that are delivered are not.
Do you love soccer? I asked him.
Yes.
Do you need to be good at golf to play soccer well?
He laughed — a real laugh, not a polite one. He had a good laugh, open and sudden. No.
If someone told you that playing soccer at the level you play it required you to get worse at golf — required you to actively spend less time on golf — would that feel like a defeat?
He thought about it. No. I don’t even like golf.
So why does spending less energy on English literature feel like defeat?
He didn’t answer immediately. I let the silence do its work.
Because I’m supposed to be good at everything, he finally said. And then, catching himself: But I’m not, actually. I never have been.
No one is, I said. The idea that exceptional people are exceptional at everything is one of the most damaging myths in education. The people who changed mathematics — the people you’ve read about, the ones whose work you know — almost none of them were excellent at everything. They were extraordinary at one thing. And they protected that one thing. They made strategic decisions about where to be good enough so they could be extraordinary somewhere else.
Good enough, he repeated. He said it like he was testing the weight of the phrase.
Good enough is not a cop-out, I said. Good enough is a decision. It’s the decision to exercise your agency, to say: I know what I am, I know what I’m not, and I am going to allocate my finite energy accordingly. Getting a B in English is not a failure. It is a strategy. One you chose. One that serves the thing you actually care about.
He sat with this for a while. Then he said: Can I think about math the same way?
Tell me what you mean.
Like — instead of trying to get every problem perfect, I decide what’s good enough. And then I stop.
Yes, I said. Exactly that.
This is the part that takes time. Understanding a concept and reorganizing your nervous system around it are different things, and perfectionism lives in the nervous system, not in the intellect. Tim could articulate the logic of good enough long before he could feel it.
We worked on it systematically over the following weeks. In his tutoring sessions and practice tests, we established a target — not a ceiling but a floor. A minimum acceptable score that represented a real achievement without demanding the impossible. Beyond that number, I told him, your job is to let it go. Not because you don’t care. Because you’ve decided that caring past a certain point costs more than it earns.
The first few times he tried this, he would finish early and sit at his desk, visibly uncomfortable, convinced he had missed something. I was in the room for some of these sessions, watching. The temptation to go back was almost physical — you could see it in his hands, which wanted to pick up the pencil again.
How do you feel? I would ask.
Like I definitely got something wrong.
Did you check everything once?
Yes.
Then you’re done. Walk out.
He would walk out. And then we would wait for the score.
The scores did not suffer. They improved. This should not have been surprising — a student who completes all the problems with a small chance of error is performing better than a student who perfects half the problems — but for Tim, seeing the numbers was the only thing that could reach the part of his brain that logic alone could not. Slowly, over weeks, the walk-out became easier. The discomfort at the door became something he recognized and moved through rather than something that stopped him.
And then something shifted that I had not quite predicted.
He started to enjoy it.
Not the strategy, not the performance — the mathematics itself. The thing he had loved as a young child, before it became a performance, before every solved problem was an object to be inspected for defect rather than a thing of beauty to be briefly held and then released. He started doing problems outside his sessions, not for competition preparation but because he wanted to. He started talking about mathematics the way he talked about soccer — with animation, with pleasure, with the ease of someone who has returned to something after a long absence.
It’s like when I was in grade school, he told me once. When I just did it because it was fun.
The USAMO qualification, when it came, surprised no one who had been watching. He had earned it not just with his ability — that had always been there — but with the psychological infrastructure to deploy it without destroying himself in the process. He crossed the line with time to spare. He walked out early. He laughed.
But mathematics competitions were only part of the picture.
The same perfectionism that had paralyzed him at his desk during timed tests had been running, quietly and just as destructively, through everything else he touched. There was the research project. There is always a research project.
Tim had spent the better part of a school year developing an independent science project — a genuinely sophisticated piece of work that reflected both his mathematical ability and his growing interest in the intersections between mathematics and physics that his mother’s career had placed permanently in his orbit. It was the kind of work that wins things. He had not submitted it anywhere.
When I asked him why, I already knew the answer. It was the answer I have heard dozens of times, in dozens of rooms, from dozens of students whose work was sitting finished and invisible in their files. It wasn’t finished yet. There was always one more section to refine, one more source to check, one more pass before it would be ready.
It was never going to be ready. That is the nature of perfectionism. The finish line keeps moving.
We sat down together in a coaching session and addressed it directly. Not about the project — about what was happening inside him when he thought about submitting it. The fear of judgment. The terror that the work, once released, would be found inadequate. The belief that one more revision would finally make it safe to send.
I asked him to read me the strongest section of the project. He did. It was excellent — genuinely excellent, with the kind of precision and conceptual clarity that takes most students years longer to develop.
But I could see that the logic alone wasn’t reaching him. So I tried something different — what psychologists call cognitive reframing, specifically a technique called temporal distancing, or what I think of more simply as pulling back until you can see the whole forest instead of just the tree directly in front of you.
Imagine you’re a mathematician, I said. A real one, doing original research. You spend two years on a problem and you publish a paper. Is your research finished?
He thought about it. No.
Why not?
Because it’s just the beginning. You build on it. Other people build on it. You write more papers.
Ten papers later, I said. Twenty. All on the same fundamental questions, each one refining and extending the last. Are you perfect?
He almost smiled. No. I’m an expert.
And do you close the lab?
No, he said, more slowly now, hearing where this was going.
Right, I said. You keep working. Because the goal was never to finish. The goal was to keep moving in the right direction. Perfection is a destination that doesn’t exist. Expertise is a direction you travel in for the rest of your life.
He was quiet for a moment. Then: So submitting this is just the first paper.
It’s just the first paper, I confirmed.
One conversation, however good, rarely rewires a belief system that has been running for years. I knew that. So alongside the coaching sessions, I introduced a set of simple daily practices designed to make the new perspective a habit rather than a one-time insight — small interventions that sound almost too modest to matter but compound quietly over weeks into something structural.
The Time Telescope. Each evening, Tim wrote three sentences in a notebook. One about how a current challenge — a test, a submission, an unfinished problem — looked and felt today. One about how he imagined it would look in a year. One about how it would look in ten. No analysis required. Just three temporal frames, written in two minutes, every night.
The Minimum Viable Submission. Before every piece of work he considered submitting, he wrote one sentence: what is the least this needs to be in order to be worth sending? Not what would make it perfect. What would make it real. The question reframes the task from an infinite standard to a specific threshold — and crossing a specific threshold is something a perfectionist can actually do.
Process praise, self-directed. At the end of each session, Tim wrote one thing he had done well — not a result, but a decision. I stopped checking after one pass. I submitted before I was ready. I walked out of the room. Small acts of agency, recorded and accumulated.
The exercises sound almost insultingly simple. They are not. Practiced consistently over weeks, they train the brain to access the wider frame automatically — to reach for the ten-year view not only when a coach provides it in a session but in the moment of anxiety itself, at the desk, at the competition, at the moment the hand wants to reach back for the pencil.
After about three weeks he told me, almost as an aside, that the science project didn’t feel as important as it had. Not unimportant — he was still serious about the work. But it had settled into its correct proportion. It was one paper. Not the paper. The first step of something that would take years, not the final verdict on whether he was good enough.
He submitted the project the following week.
He won — a regional science award that, on an application, appears as a single line but carries the weight of everything behind it: the months of genuine intellectual work, the courage to put it forward, and the validation of people qualified to judge it. More than the award, something shifted in how he understood his own work. He had believed, on some level, that the feeling of readiness was a signal he needed to wait for. He now understood that the feeling of readiness, for someone with his particular psychology, was a signal that would never reliably come — and that the decision to submit was not a response to that feeling but a replacement for it.
By the time Tim’s application was ready, the portfolio of what he had built was striking — not because it was without imperfection, but because it was real. The USAMO qualification. Three research papers, one of them published. A prestigious summer mathematics program. The science award. Advanced STEM coursework that reflected genuine ambition rather than strategic safety. Bs in English and history that represented deliberate choice, not defeat. And an application essay that sounded, for once, exactly like him — because he had written it in a sitting, in a first draft that I told him to send before he had time to improve it into oblivion.
It was not the application of a student who had done everything perfectly. It was the application of a student who had done the right things fully — who had committed completely to what he was genuinely exceptional at, and freed himself from the exhausting performance of pretending to be something he was not. That distinction, invisible to most people looking at the file from the outside, was everything.
He got into MIT.
His mother, when she heard, called me from the car. I could hear that she was crying, and then laughing at herself for crying. She mentioned the report card I had shown her — the one with the Bs and Cs that she had stared at for so long in my office.
I kept thinking about it, she said. That student. The one who got in with all those Bs. I kept thinking: what did they know that I didn’t?
They knew, I said, that the goal was never the grade.
I know this because I have spoken with Tim again — more than ten years after those first conversations in my office. He is beginning a PhD program, pursuing original research in mathematics. He is not finished. He will never be finished. He is moving in a direction, adding to a body of work that will take a lifetime to build. The boy who once couldn’t leave a competition problem alone without checking it three times is now learning, in the most serious institution his field has to offer, that the work is never done — and that this is not a source of anxiety. It is the whole point.
Tim’s story is not unusual. That is perhaps the most important thing to say about it.
In more than twenty years of this work, I have sat across from versions of Tim many times. The names change. The subjects change. Sometimes it is a girl who has spent eight months on a research project that would win competitions if she could only bring herself to submit it. Sometimes it is a boy who rewrites his entire college essay two days before the deadline, certain that the six months of careful work he has produced is not good enough — and who has to be talked, with some difficulty, back to the version he almost destroyed. The presenting complaint from parents is almost always some variation of lazy, or slow, or won’t apply himself, or doesn’t seem to care. The reality, in case after case, is the opposite.
These students are not failing to try. They are trying in a way that has turned effort into a trap.
The source is almost always the same thing: fear. Not fear of failure in the abstract, but fear of a very specific moment — the moment when the work leaves their hands and enters the world and becomes available for judgment. Perfectionism is, at its root, a strategy for staying in that protected space indefinitely.
The college admissions process is particularly brutal for these students, because it is the first system they have encountered that cannot be managed by staying in that space. You have to submit. The deadline is real. The work has to leave your hands. And the outcome — no matter how good the work is — is not fully within your control. For a student who has spent years believing that sufficient effort produces sufficient protection, this discovery is not uncomfortable. It is catastrophic.
The good news — and there is good news, real and demonstrated — is that this is not fixed. It is a pattern, and patterns can be changed. The change is not motivational. It is structural. It requires coaching that addresses the belief system underneath the behavior, not just the behavior itself. It requires, often, that the parents be coached alongside the student. It requires starting early — before the stakes become existential. Before the college essay is due in two days.
